Madeline Island Museum 2010 Summer Schedule
Event Date: Thursday, July 01, 2010
Location: Madeline Island
After you have visited the Drummond Historical Museum, or just looking for another interesting museum up on Lake Superior, head for the Madeline Island Museum - catch the Madeline Island Ferry out of Bayfield, WI (follow Hwy 63 to Hwy 2 east to Hwy 13 North) to get to the island. Not as far or difficult as it sounds and it makes for a wonderful day trip. A personal suggestion is to leave your vehicle in the Ferry parking lot in Bayfield and go as a walk-on passenger on the Ferry and stand along the railing or sit on top or in the shade on first deck. Lots of savings that way and you can walk the two blocks to the museum and then two block back to town for some interesting shopping and food and sit and watch Lake Superior and boats from a different perspective. Madeline Island Museum is a historic site owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Click here for the Madeline Island Museum Schedule. A Passion for Baskets Exhibit at the Drummond Library thru September 11
Event Date: Thursday, August 12, 2010
Location: Drummond Public Library

A Passion for Baskets Exhibit is now at the Drummond Public Library with baskets made by Connie Ryks (far left photo) and April Stone-Dahl.
Beginning learning basket weaving in 1980, Connie Ryk’s work has evolved from traditional shaped reed baskets to more free-form baskets made from natural, gathered materials. She taught traditional basketry for several years through adult education classes in 5 different Minneapolis suburbs, as well as in Ryk’s former gift shop "The Apple Barrel" in Wayzata MN. Connie will display baskets that range from vessels to carry and keep treasures close at hand to sculptural baskets to view as an art form.
April Stone-Dahl was introduced to the world of woven Black Ash Baskets in the spring of 1998 by her husband, Darrod. After having watched his basket change shape and color after one full year of being used every day, outside in the elements, she looked at Black Ash in a whole new light. She began to weave the following spring, 1999. She relied on books, photographs and the weaving of the material herself as there were not many Ash basket weavers she knew. In 2006 she met her first fellow weaver of Ash, and since then, has met a few more. April is grateful for the differing styles and reasons why people weave, their historical and cultural ties to the material, and what they have taught her about the process of weaving and of the material itself. The sense of being self-taught, and therefore having nothing to go by except what April wanted to see as a finished basket, let her to deeply appreciate the styles of utilitarian baskets. "Baskets should serve a function. Baskets should be used", April emphasized.
