DIGITAL AUDIO PICTURE FRAME PROJECT
Photos Below of Students Working on Project
The Drummond Historical Museum had the Junior Class of Ms. Renee Young (Drummond High School - American Literature) helping us in putting together 6 audio descriptions on existing displays using a Digital Audio Picture Frame. The class of 25 was divided into 6 groups and each group had been assigned a display, researched what is shown in the display, created an outline, and wrote a 2 to 3 1/2 minute (or a few seconds more or less) script. Each group then recorded their script onto a digital audio picture frame device to be positioned securely at each display area. A photo of each group with their names was included in the photo area on the digital device to acknowledge the students who participated in that audio creation.
The students had been coming to the museum each of their February class hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 to 12:30 including the walk down from/back to the school. The activity also extended into the first week of March. The intent of the project was to have the students do all the processes for completion of the project at the museum. They began with using the existing display, Drummond Centennial Book, pamphlets, and other written materials at the museum to develop an outline of information to be included. Then they developed a written document from their outline and information, developed a script from that, typed the script, determined how the recording would be done (just one individual speaking or all individuals have parts, background sounds, format, etc.) and then practice, practice and practice using the digital recording device. As the groups preceded thru their steps, they would check with the museum volunteers to be sure they were on the right track - and if challenged about a fact, they sure set us straight by showing us the documentation to prove their point.
On Thursday, February 18 Sue Amundson, Staff Writer at "The County Journal" and "The Daily Press" joined us to observe, interview, and photograph the students as they worked on this project and included her story in the "The County Journal". We are so very appreciative of the students for their enthusiasm and creativity. And we freely admit we do bribe with treats and a promise of a monetary donation to the class.
The project is funded with memorials given in memory of Gordon & Jennie Sorenson, David Unseth, and Jim Unseth. An audio project has been in development as far as the "how do we do it" by the volunteers at the Museum for quite a few years. Gordon Sorenson conducted a program dedicating the Drummond Museum on July 3, 1976. Gordon was the museum's first Curator and was known as the person who, through his hard work and perseverance, made the museum a reality and a place to preserve the local history. Both Gordan & his wife, Jennie, were active on the Board of Directors of the Museum for many years.
David Unseth went to school in Drummond and died from an illness in 2006. He was a young man who had achieved his goal of becoming a pilot and he loved being in the air flying a plane to and from anywhere. His father, Jim Unseth, taught school in Drummond from 1966 until he retired in 1996. Jim was also President of the Museum's Board of Directors for several years before his death in 2009.
The Digital Audio Picture Frames were purchased from Avitra LLC. The volunteers at the museum, which includes everyone on the Board of Directors and all of us that help in the museum, sincerely appreciate Ms. Young and her wonderful students for taking on the challenges of this audio project. It has been a delight watching them pull this together and we know you visitors will enjoy listening to their recordings and learning more about how the Town of Drummond came to be and what wonderful history it has - and continues to have with great students and a teacher like these. We give the success of the project an A++. Thank You!!
