Learning About Veteran's Day

What is Veteran's Day?  When is Veteran's Day and why is it a legal holiday in the United States?  These were some of many questions asked of the 6th graders in Mrs. Wiebusch's class from the Drummond Public School, while they visited the Drummond Historical Museum on Wednesday, November 2, 2011.

Les and Karen Watters, members of the Drummond Historical Society, and Amy Wiebusch divided the class into three groups.  One group learned about the history of the American flag and had the experience of folding the flag into a triangle.  The second group learned about the five branches of military service and wore uniforms from WWII.  The third group learned about Veteran's Day and the meaning of 11-11-11, then completed assigned research using the computers in the library.  The three groups rotated study areas so that all students were provided with the same experiences.

While the students were busily completing their assignments, Rodger Larsen photographed the activities in progress.  Each of the three groups, in service uniforms, was photographed outside the library/museum posing alongside a US flag (forty-eight stars).
