Town of Drummond Wisconsin
A Short History of the Town of Drummond
John S. Owen came to Wisconsin in 1873 when the prospect of a railroad penetrating into the Bayfield County area of Wisconsin increased his interest in these lands.
In the following years he sent his lumber foreman, Frank Drummond to the Cable/Drummond area with a crew of men, oxen and equipment.
When a building site was decided upon, they proceeded to build a root house.
A cook within the group made and hung a sign with DRUMMOND written on it over the root house door.
This stopping place became the Town of Drummond,
and in the following years the Rust Owen Lumber Company was built,
and the town developed as men came to work at the mill, and their families followed.
The lumber mill was operated until November 7th, 1930, when it was permanently closed.
